Want to Make Sure No Weeds Grow in Your Garden?

When Will a Landscaper Use Landscape Fabric?

When it comes to landscaping beds and flowers, there is nothing more frustrating than watching weeds pop up each day that detract from the appearance of your garden. Well never fear, this is where your landscape fabric will come into use. This is a specially designed woven polypropylene, that is placed in beds and borders to help cut down the number of weeds that grow by acting as a barrier. This fabric is permeable, will allow both air and water to pass through, however, blocks sunlight to prevent the germination of almost every weed plant.

Whether you or your landscaper will be installing the fabric, fabric weed barriers have proved to be an effective way to reduce weed growth. Even in pre-existing gardens and beds where weeds were a problem, landscape fabric does help to reduce weed growth and improve the appearance of a landscaped space.

Available at most nurseries and garden centers, landscape fabric is usually sold in rolls and will need to be cut to fit in a designated area. Even though it is possible to install this fabric after a bed has been planted, it is much easier to install beforehand. When you are installing a fabric weed barrier in an area that has already been planted, you need to remove all the weeds first, then rake the area. Lay your fabric out and make sure to cut out areas where the likes of shrubs, trees or perennial plants are growing, then you need to tuck the fabric around the bases. Landscape fabric comes with either pins or anchors to secure it to the ground.

Installing landscape fabric in an unplanted area is mostly the same, except you can install and anchor the fabric using the manufacturer’s directions, and then cut holes for planting afterward. With landscape fabric and plants in place, you should finish off by installing either mulch or stones over the top. Should you use a high-quality fabric which has already been treated with a UV protector, it should, in theory, last several years without showing any signs of decomposing.
